Earlier this month, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) granted Waymo permission to participate in the state’s pilot initiative to offer autonomous vehicle (AV) services to the public.

“We see growing momentum in this area and are working to ensure the safe expansion of the driverless pilot program,” said CPUC Commissioner Genevieve Shiroma.

Under the terms of the permit, Waymo can offer driverless rides throughout San Francisco and parts of Daly City, as well as parts of Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Mountain View, Palo Alto and Sunnyvale.

During testing, Waymo says it has completed more than 20,000 rides since August 2021. People who sign up for a waitlist through the Waymo One app will be the first to be invited to rides “in the coming weeks.”

As long as Waymo can avoid liability for any serious accidents when they escalate, the pager service should provide a much-needed boost to public confidence in self-driving vehicles.

Therefore, it becomes necessary to delve deeper into the potential of self-driving passenger transportation services and the impact they can have on the future of transportation and mobility.

Join us as Tasha Kenny explores the prospects and challenges ahead for widespread adoption of this innovative technology.

Previously, ARK projected that self-driving taxi platform operators could achieve a 60% acceptance rate or gross revenue reduction when marketing, exceeding Uber and Lyft’s current rate of 20% to 30%. We are now wondering if the takeover rate could be closer to 80-90%.

Autonomous ride-hailing services should offer consumers a better experience than human-driven ride-hailing services, including an 80% reduction in accidents and additional efficiencies associated with little or no human involvement. Based on this analysis, we estimate an uptake rate for autonomous driving at 60%, the highest of any observed uptake rates across industries.

A new article on market economics calls for the possibility of applying Coasian transaction cost principles to self-driving taxi services – a factor we did not take into account in our previous revenue rate estimates. Hockenmeier, head of strategy and analytics at Faire, posits that markets set fees based on the transaction costs they avoid: Zillow eliminates search costs, eBay reduces negotiation costs, Airbnb focuses on enforcement to ensure fair transaction costs, and Amazon eliminates distribution costs.

Self-driving operators must be able to reduce the cost of implementation and, more importantly, the cost of finding a good driver.

To illustrate this possibility, consider Tesla’s self-driving ambitions. Platform fees can reach 80-90%, with 10-20% of total revenue to incentivize vehicle owners to join the Tesla network.

Waymo Is Reportedly Planning To Launch Its Autonomous Uber Like Ride Hailing Service In December

Previous ARK research suggested that Tesla and other autonomous platform providers could compensate vehicle owners for operation in the 0.20-0.30 cents per mile range. As a result, at a price of more than $2 per mile – roughly what Uber rates today – the independent platform operator could potentially capture 80% to 90% of total revenue, much more than we originally estimated.

1) Tesla may need to offer a higher subscription rate to incentivize enough owners to join the network;

2) Since the cost per mile depends on the vehicle’s usage rate, which is likely to be lower in the early stages of autonomous driving, the initial rates may be somewhat lower;

3) take-up rates may need to decline from higher levels over time as platform operators expand across geographies and competition enters the market; a
