Ev Battery Diagnostics 2025

Ev Battery Diagnostics 2025 – Ever since Porsche unveiled its first electric car a few years ago, any advice on buying the Taycan has come with a big caveat: yes, it drives well… sure, it charges pretty quickly… it’s managed to become the Porsche of electric cars, but its driving range is very short . a completely different story.

Indeed, luxury electric car buyers can buy a Tesla Model S, a Mercedes EQS sedan, or a Lucid Air that can add 100 miles or more on a full charge, and in several cases, pay less for the privilege. Choosing the Porsche Taycan has always meant sacrificing range for driving dynamics, but after six hours of driving and a particularly short charge with the refreshed 2025 Taycan prototype, it’s clear that Porsche has understood the task.

Porsche gave us the keys to a 2025 Taycan 4 Cross Turismo riding on 21-inch wheels and sent us driving south from Marina Del Rey, California to Tijuana, Mexico. We stopped in San Diego for lunch before heading back to Los Angeles to a charging station near our starting point. The shortest route is around 290 miles, our first clue is that Porsche has made some serious changes to the new model.

Last year’s Taycan couldn’t make this journey on its best day. The equivalent of our 2024 test car was EPA-estimated at just 235 miles, and even the longest-range model can only go 246 miles before the battery dies.

We topped it up at the hotel, and on a 100 percent charge in range mode, the dashboard estimated 322 miles. The route was mostly flat, and with the weather above 60 degrees and the car’s climate control at 72 degrees, the Taycan was ready to show off its new product lines. We set the cruise control to 70 mph, as we do with our in-house real-world range testing.

We drove the first half of the day in Range mode, which essentially puts the climate control in Eco mode and lowers the Taycan’s air suspension to its lowest setting. Why doesn’t a car always shrink for best aerodynamics? According to Porsche, shorter air springs mean less suspension travel and slightly less ride comfort, though we couldn’t tell the difference. Estimates of the Taycan’s range vary by drive mode, and switching to Normal mode and activating the cooled, massaging seats reduced it by around 2%.

As we headed back north to the charger, the new Taycan’s navigation system recognized our destination as a charging station and primed the battery for a fast charge from the jump. We used the charger with 6 percent battery remaining after 298.3 miles of driving, averaging 3.2 mpg.

Using a little (literal) math, we calculated the 2025 Porsche Taycan 4 Cross Turismo’s highway range to be 317 miles. Note that this is an anecdotal, best-case scenario with mild weather and an average speed of just 55 mph—we’ll do a distance test as soon as possible—but that’s more than a third of the extra range over the vehicle’s EPA-estimated range. And remember, this is one of the least efficient models in the Taycan range; Another journalist driving a RWD Taycan sedan reported 360 miles, and someone drove 345 miles in a Taycan Turbo.

Range matters, of course, and vehicles like the Tesla Model S (up to 405 miles) and the Lucid Air (up to 516 miles) can still go further between charges than the Taycan. However, keep in mind that it is rare for a driver to drive 300 miles on the road without stopping. When it’s time for a snack and a coffee break, the Porsche will quickly get you back on the track.

We hit the 350 kW Electrify America fast charging station and are ready to see what the 2025 Porsche Taycan is capable of. When the original Taycan was launched in 2020, it was the first electric vehicle to feature an 800-volt electric architecture, providing industry-leading charging speeds of up to 270kW. (EV units can be confusing, but think of kW as the charge rate, which measures how many kWh—the unit capacity of the battery—the battery can discharge per hour while connected to a power source.)

When we got to the charger with the pre-conditioned battery, the display in the digital gauge cluster told us we could start the charging session with 290kW. We connected the mains and immediately saw 293 kW on the display of the charging station, which jumped to 309 kW in the first three minutes of charging.

In the first five minutes of the session, we charge from 6 to 30 percent state-of-charge (SoC) and add about 75 miles. Charge speeds stayed above 310kW, peaking at 323kW (one journalist reported seeing 333kW) until the SoC reached 62%, then dropped to around 220kW. As with all electric vehicles, the charging rate slows down significantly when the battery reaches about 80% capacity.

The charging station is also virtually silent, unlike the jet turbine roar we’ve experienced in some fast chargers. We charged from 6 to 80 percent and added 83.0 kWh of energy in just 18 minutes.

To put that in perspective, the fastest charging speed we’ve seen from the Tesla Model S Plaid is 250kW, and the Lucid Air is 300kW. To date, no car has reached this mark.

However, that big number means nothing because the distance added per minute is a factor of both energy transfer (kW) and efficiency (mi/kWh). Based on our odometer average performance of 3.2mpg, with 320kW of power, the Taycan can add 27mpg of real-world range.

Why The Electric Vehicle Battery Race Needs A Recycling Revolution

The EPA reports up to 4.6 miles per kWh for the Lucid Air Touring, which means that even when charging at a slower 300 kW rate, it can reach 23 miles per minute. (That means we only got 2.5 mpg long-term on the Lucid Air Grand Touring Performance, which is EPA-rated at 3.8 mpg.)

Porsche has yet to give us any technical details about the 2025 Taycan, but our experience driving and charging the manufacturer’s latest electric sports sedan can give us some hints about what it can do here. By interpolating the charging data (allowing for the uncertainty of the inevitable losses between the power supplied by the charger and the power absorbed by the battery), we can conclude that the Taycan has a higher capacity battery with a capacity of 100 to 110 kWh compared to 93.4 kWh. For the 2020-2024 model.

But, you say, how does a ~10 percent increase in battery capacity result in a ~35 percent increase in range? In addition to more energy storage, Porsche also made the Taycan more efficient. The revised battery chemistry, made possible by technology that wasn’t available when Porsche started developing the original Taycan in 2016, will certainly help, and the new chemistry could also allow for faster charging.

The new battery could provide stronger regenerative braking while improving range, and we wouldn’t be surprised to hear that Porsche installed a more efficient motor in the front or rear. Our test vehicle also rolled on Hankook EV-specific tires, which may have lower rolling resistance than last year’s rubber. It makes sense to improve aerodynamics and reduce weight, as well as increase range.
