Swappable Battery Technology – Stellantis has signed an agreement to equip its cars with Ample’s electric vehicle (EV) battery conversion technology.

The solution, which can deliver a fully charged EV battery in less than five minutes, will first be used in the Free2Move car sharing Fiat 500e fleet next year (2024).

“Along with other projects we have focused on, Ample’s modular battery conversion solution has the opportunity to provide our customers with greater energy efficiency, excellent performance and low range anxiety.

Battery swapping technology allows an EV customer who stops at a battery swapping station to replace their dead EV battery with a fully charged battery.

The two companies are in discussions about expanding Ample’s modular battery conversion technology to meet customer demand across Stellantis fleets and other Stellantis platforms and geographies.

An initial program is planned for Madrid, Spain using a fleet of 100 Fiat 500s on Stellantis Free2Move car sharing service.

Once parked inside, the driver initiates the battery exchange from the mobile app, resulting in a full battery charge in less than five minutes.

Ample’s modular battery conversion technology, which is made available to EV customers on a subscription service basis, can reduce the time an EV leaves service while also reducing the financial impact.

It claims that this approach reduces the initial total cost of the vehicle, ensuring that the customer always benefits from the latest battery technology, effectively increasing the EV’s range and lifespan.

But there’s another way to put EVs on the road, and Daimler’s truck and bus division is testing a solution from Mitsubishi Fuso Ample. 

The Northern California startup has had battery swap stations on the ground in the San Francisco Bay Area for several years, serving select drivers with specially modified cars. A partnership with Mitsubishi Fuso to produce the latest version of the company’s eCanter electric light-duty panel trucks validates Ample’s business model and keeps those delivery trucks on the road for longer hours of the day. 

As with the test underway in Northern California, the panel truck vehicles are towed to the station and lifted into the air, and a series of small robots remove and replace proprietary battery modules in a target time of five minutes. Removed batteries were stored and charged in a side compartment as the station prepared for another exchange.

Earlier this year, Ample unveiled its latest station iteration, which cuts swapping times from 10 minutes to five minutes and cuts some complexity to increase robustness. It also has a long swapping station, which is essential to accommodate light-duty trucks like the Mitsubishi Fuso.

It’s a huge leap forward from what the company envisioned years ago through a growing charging infrastructure that somehow has yet to materialize. 

Ample’s focus right now is on the fleet. At a demonstration event for its new station earlier this year, an Uber driver was ready to complete a few trips and charge his vehicle — but instead opted for a quick battery swap with an Ample station. The goal of reaching the level of gas stations is almost reached. Still, it’s hard to beat a system that took generations to create, and its power delivery system is the fluid you can pump into a vehicle.

One thing Ample has over older refueling stations is that its battery swap stations can be set up in three days. Give them a flat slab of concrete and they will flat pack the parts to assemble. Two weeks were previously required for the stations, but like the rest of the setup, this has been modified to increase capacity.

For example, in the first iteration, the battery swap resembles a dance of robots and battery modules. Now it is less impressive as most of the action is happening without the outside world watching.

“When we first started, we were excited about robots,” said Khaled Hassouna, CEO and founder of Ample. Previous iterations of the swapping station raised the vehicle off the ground by its tires, much like a lift at a service station. This was done without raising the vehicle’s associated platform.

With that system, the driver and passenger are essentially trapped in the vehicle after being lifted into the air to allow the robot to do its job. Now, thanks to a platform that rises with the vehicle, the driver and passengers can exit the vehicle during the swap.  

The company has also expanded its supported vehicles. At its research facility, we saw a Fuso panel truck. When asked, Hassouna granted that this updated generation swapping station has a higher canopy than the original swapping station and that the lift is now adjustable on both the front and rear wheels, allowing multiple sizes of vehicles to pass through the same station. According to Ample, it now supports vehicles ranging from small cars to large Class 3 trucks.

The need to support a wide variety of vehicles is also one of the reasons why Ample switches from one vehicle to multiple modules rather than one big pack. While swapping out the modularity pack isn’t as fast, you can fit the module to any car and the system will be compatible with future vehicles. Additionally, as battery technology improves, the EV’s lifecycle will be longer because it’s not stuck with a slowly depleting pack. Instead, it takes the best that Ample has to offer, every time the batteries are changed. 

All this sounds impressive in theory, but it needs automotive partners. EV startup Fisker has announced that it will support the Ample system in the Ocean electric SUV in the first quarter of 2024. Ample said they have other partners in the works, but did not share any additional details. 

Fisker is a good thing, but the company has no vehicles to sell, and unless the legacy automaker is willing to build a vehicle that can support Ample’s battery modules on a large scale, the company is asking to be kept.
